 Selecting a gallery
Images are categorised into galleries to make your search quicker and easier. Wherever possible select a gallery before you enter key words. To search several galleries at the same time, select ALL GALLERIES.

Entering key words
Separate words with a single space. Do not use + or -, or the words and, or, not between words.

Word order
The search engine will search for your key words in any order: e.g. dog running or running dog.

Action or Activity
To find an image of a subject performing a certain action or activity use the "-ing" form of a verb (e.g., eating, sleeping, running).

You can use the key word grooming to find several specific actions, such as an animal washing, licking, bathing, or preening. Use the key words mutual grooming to find one animal grooming another.

Pedigree or non-pedigree domestic animals

• To search for a pedigree, or purebred animal, use the key word pedigree.
• To search for a non-pedigree or crossbred animal, use the key word non-pedigree.

Refining your search for one or more than one subject in an image
Regardless of whether a word is entered in singular or plural form, both forms will be searched. E.g. dog or dogs will produce the same results.

To view images that contain only one subject (e.g. one dog) highlight the phrase one subject per image. To view images that contain more than one subject (e.g. two or more dogs) highlight the phrase more than one subject per image.

Search Tips

Action or Activity
To find a cat performing a specific action or activity use the “-ing” form of a verb (e.g. scratching, eating, sleeping, jumping, running).

Pedigree or non-pedigree cats
To search for a purebred cat, use the key word pedigree. To search for a crossbred cat, use the key words non-pedigree or domestic.

Longhaired or Shorthaired Cats
To search for cats with different coat lengths, enter the key words longhair or shorthair.

Key words for colour varieties
Chinchilla is another name for a white Persian. In many colour varieties the word tortoiseshell is shortened to tortie. A tortiepoint is cat with tortoiseshell points on its head and feet. In a tabbypoint the points are a tabby colour.

There are three varieties of tabby: classic tabby, mackerel tabby and spotted tabby. Lynx is an alternative term for spotted tabby. The word bicolor describes a cat with a coat of two distinct colours. The word seal denotes black. Dark red is called ruddy.

Young cats
Use the key word young. To find very young cats use the key word kitten.
